At the Church of Hope SDA in Jacksonville, Florida, the Spirit of God moved powerfully as Pastor David Jimenez delivered a solemn and stirring message entitled “Idols of the Heart.” This sermon brought to light one of the greatest spiritual dangers facing God’s people today—not idols of wood or stone, but the hidden idols that dwell in the secret places of the heart.
What Are Idols of the Heart?
Pastor Jimenez reminded the congregation that while ancient Israel bowed before golden calves and pagan images, modern believers are often enslaved to idols just as dangerous—though far less visible. An idol, he explained, is anything that takes the place of God in our affections, loyalty, or trust.
It may be wealth, career, entertainment, relationships, personal opinions, or even religious forms when they replace a living walk with Christ. Drawing from Ezekiel 14:3—“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart”—the message pressed home that the true battleground of worship is not outward, but inward.
